Indication of Stress

Stress is a normal physical response to events that make you feel threatened or upset your balance in some way. Stress is often described as a feeling of being overloaded, tied up, tense or worried. When you sense danger whether it’s real or imagined the body's defenses move into high speed rapidly, automatic process known as the “fight-or-flight-or-freeze” reaction, or the stress response.

There can be many different stressful situations or demands in an individual's life, however, the individual's experience of being 'stressed' is related to their perception of having the ability to cope with the stressful event. Research has shown that the stress hormone cortisol reduces a person's ability to retrieve information and memory. High levels of stress also promote depression, which severely impairs memory and increases the risk for dementia. Try reducing stress and anxiety with fresh, natural scents. In general they induce a calming state. In one recent study, volunteers became extremely anxious when they were confined in coffin-like tubes, but then calmed down when the tubes were infused with the smells of green apple and cucumber. These odors seem to have an impact on the limbic systems, the emotional center of the brain.Try to imagine yourself somewhere calm and peaceful, such as a pleasant garden or a relaxing beach, and let your stress drain away. Simply closing your eyes and imagining you are in a calm place should be effective in reducing stress.
